Yahoo Article on “Healthy Foods” – a sign of a step in the right direction?

So it seems a lot of the more “mainstream” Internet health and fitness circles have been discussing a recent Yahoo article called “The 20 worst healthy foods in the supermarket. A friend of mine sent it to me, and I grudgingly read it. To be honest, I expected to roll my eyes at it and to feel I’d completely wasted the time I spent on it.

I was pleasantly surprised. The article was light on science, but most people don’t seem to be terribly interested in developing an understanding of the science behind this. It was still taking the view that whole grains are a good thing and still slightly phobic about saturated fat. That said, I don’t preach the “no grains” approach too feverantly. I practice it, and have seen impressive results – but I don’t have good science to back it up; and I’m not inclined to present my own anecdotal experiences are more than that.

When I got excited what that I noticed the article was very critical of excess sugar (particularly high fructose corn syrup) in products claiming to be healthy. Most of their healthy alternatives were in fact reduced sugar approaches.

I’m wondering if this is a step in the right direction. Reversing decades of dogma doesn’t happen overnight but I’m starting to see mainstream nutrition articles that discuss glycemic load and suggest increasing fat intake. I’ve seen a few mentions of the “cave man diet” in filler articles on news stations. Are the commonly held views actually changing, or am I getting sucked into wishful thinking again?

As show by my previous post here about models and standards of beauty I do tend to be a little out of touch with what the general public attitudes are.

    I think it’s definitely a step in the right direction. One thing is it’s not fat phobic like many mainstream health articles. There’s not many articles like this that would recommend butter over margarine.
