Woman…lifting…does not compute

Posted on | October 10, 2008 | 1 Comment

My girlfriend is recovering from an injury, and is about six weeks into a basic liner progression barbell strength program.

She hit 135lbs for 3 sets of 5 on her back squats for the first time yesterday, and was pretty pumped about it (she weighs about 125).  As she was taking the bar out of the racks, on her first set, a woman came over beside the rack, stopped perhaps four or five feet from us and just stared.

This random woman held this dumbfounded stare for a good 40-60 seconds without a word. Close enough to feel her breathing on us. Either completely oblivious to, or unconcerned about how apparent it was.

I realize that people aren’t used to seeing women lift productively. I get that, we’re both used to it – I’ll even admit to some immature enjoyment of the attention it brings.  But this woman looked like she seriously couldn’t comprehend what she was seeing. Totally “deer in headlights” stuck.

Then she went back to doing 40lbs on the leg curl machine.
< sigh >
