Climbing (and eating) with Son of Grok

Posted on | June 8, 2009 | 4 Comments

Rayna and I spent last week traveling. My mother lives in theMiddleOfNowhere, New Mexico so we flew into Albuquerque, drove the three hours to her place, then picked her up and drove all over the place exploring. After a week or so of this I was thoroughly worn out from four days in the car and from eating so-so food. We had a day left before heading back and I had been close to two weeks without climbing. Going more than a week often threatens my mental stability, so I dropped Son of Grok a asked if he was interested in getting out. The weather turned out to be against us for climbing outside (it’s not supposed to rain in friggan New Mexico) so we ended up heading to the indoor gym SOG frequents.

I recognized Son of Grok right away by the cave man beard, and the fact that he walks around dragging his knuckles behind him. We ended up having a great time, complete with cheesy pictures to boot.

The climbing there is a little less technical and more off balance than I’m used too. I found the feet to all be placed at slightly off center positions, and the climbing to be more upper body intensive than usual. Three days later my back and biceps were still sore, where usually only my core and forearms are really worked from climbing. Perhaps I’m just making excuses though, which is something I’m excellent at. The gym is a lot of fun though, and in addition to the usual climbing routes, they include a lot of fun, vaguely related climbing “toys” like gymnastics rings, bars, etc… certainly a decent place to drop by.

Afterward SOG introduced us to quite possibly the greatest restaurant ever. Rudys, those of you from the Albuquerque area may already be familiar with it, and thus unimpressed, but I was throughly dumbfounded. At first glance, the place looks like a little bit of a dive, it has wooden “park bench” style tables covered with plastic tablecloths and one piece plastic chairs. The menu consists nearly completely of MEAT, sold by the pound.

Being a naive consumer from the east that I am, I spent a few minutes looking around for the REAL menu – with the sides, and other assorted crap I’m normally not overly interested in. To be fair, there was a small poster board announcing potatoes and the like, also having the option of being topped in MEAT. I settled down in front of half a rack of ribs, and a half pound of brisket and tried to resist the urge to hunker over my food and growl at people when they looked at it.

Rayna didn’t bring her camera in, but I managed to get a blurry cell photo that sums the place up well.

Thanks again to Son of Grok for showing us around. There seems to be a decent amount of cross traffic between our two sites, so most of you are probably already aware of his, but be sure to check it out if you haven’t already.

Jessica – Rayna and I would like to check out T-Wall sometime, and you’re welcome to join us at the Red River Gorge in the fall. We generally try to avoid it in the summer though, too hot, humid and buggy.

    Kelly –

Anything else you’d recommend in the area? My mom lives about three hours from there.
